International Coastal Clean UP 2019

International Coastal Clean UP 2019

Each year the Heroes Foundation (the Foundation) Club members, within the Youth Development Programme (YDP), partner with the local arm of Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup for a worldwide coastal beach cleanup initiative. This year, the event was carded for September 21, 2019 took the team to the Point Sable Beach Site, La Brea. Our island of Trinidad has many beautiful rivers and beaches therefore it’s important to keep them all clean. Initiatives like this help prevent flooding and water contamination within communities. Over the last four (4) years, on average 3,200 volunteers removed approximately 37,000 lbs of debris from 35 miles of beach landscape.

This year, over 400 students and accompanying adults from the YDP’s fifteen (15) enrolled secondary schools as well as those involved in Heroes Foundation’s Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programme visited the Point Sable Beach site. The students teamed up with other volunteers to participate in the exercise of collecting data on the different types and quantities of debris found on the beaches and water ways. This exercise also helped complement their environmental studies in terms of the importance of protecting the environment which is in line with the United Nations Millennium Development Goal #7 â€“ Environmental Sustainability.

Best of Luck to the Foundation and YDF in all future endeavors. We are pleased to have partnered with you both for such a worthy cause.
